Expanding the Scope of Povidone Iodine in Ophthalmology

Instilling 5% of povidone iodine in the cul-de-sac of the conjunctiva for 5 minutes followed by cleaning of periocular area with 10% povidone iodine twice is the best prophylaxis against endophthalmitis.

Besides this primary use, povidone iodine also has other uses.

1. Corneal FB

Use 5% Betadine before removing any corneal foreign body.

2. Penetrating and perforating globe injuries:

Use 0.5% during all traumatic surgeries.

3. Adenoviral conjunctivitis

For adenoviral conjunctivitis, one can simply use 0.5% betadine without resorting to other antimicrobials.

You can constitute 0.5% Betadine by taking 10 ml of artificial tears and adding to it 1 ml of 5% Betadine.

For surgery post trauma, add 50 ml Betadine to 500 ml of BSS while operating.

It will greatly cut down the microbial load.

Betadine acts on both the viruses and bacteria.

You can inject 1 ml of Aurodone eye drops into a 10 ml bottle of artificial tears and dispense to the patients to be used along with other specific antimicrobials.
