Managing Side Effects of Cataract Surgery: An Ophthalmologist’s Guide

Understanding the Side Effects of Cataract Surgery and How to Manage Them

As an experienced ophthalmologist, Dr Navin Kumar Gupta, who operates from the renowned Shankar Netrika Eye Centre in Mumbai, has often guided patients through the process of cataract surgery. A common and generally safe procedure, cataract surgery can, however, sometimes lead to certain side effects. Here, we’ll explore what these might be and how they can be effectively managed.

Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial one. This procedure is typically very successful, restoring vision to many who have experienced the blurring and glare associated with cataracts. But like any surgical procedure, it’s not without its potential complications.

Here are eight side effects that may occur following cataract surgery:

1. Mild Pain and Discomfort: It’s not uncommon to feel a bit of discomfort post-surgery, but this usually subsides within a few days.

2. Red or Bloodshot Eyes: This can occur due to the small blood vessels in the whites of the eye rupturing during surgery. It’s typically temporary and clears up on its own.

3. Feeling of Something in the Eye: This sensation usually disappears as the eye heals.

4. Blurry Vision: This is often a temporary condition that improves within a few days or weeks.

5. Increased Sensitivity to Light: This can last for a few weeks but gradually improves.

6. Swelling of the Eye or Eyelids: This is usually temporary and can be reduced with medication.

7. Dry Eyes: Artificial tears or prescribed eye drops can help alleviate this condition.

8. Floaters or Flashes of Light: These can be a cause for concern and should be reported to your eye doctor immediately.

The occurrence of these side effects does not necessarily mean that anything has gone wrong with the surgery. They are usually temporary and manageable. However, persistent issues or severe symptoms should be reported to your eye doctor immediately.
