Progression of Cataract Operation Techniques: An Ophthalmologist’s Perspective

Progression of Cataract Operation Techniques: An Ophthalmologist’s Perspective

Cataract surgery is a common procedure that has evolved significantly over time, and as a leading eye surgeon at Shankar Netrika Eye Centre in Mumbai, I am intimately familiar with these developments.

Cataract surgery involves the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed an opacification, which is known as a cataract. This is typically due to aging, but can also be caused by trauma, radiation exposure, and certain medications.

Historically, cataract surgery involved a large incision in the cornea, removal of the entire lens, and eyeglasses were needed to restore vision after the surgery. This method, known as intracapsular cataract extraction, was quite invasive and required a long recovery period.

However, modern cataract surgery has become a minimally invasive procedure. The standard method now is phacoemulsification, which involves making a small incision in the cornea, breaking up the cataract with ultrasound, and removing the fragments. An artificial intraocular lens is then inserted in the lens capsule, and no stitches are typically needed.

Lasers are now being used to further improve the precision and safety of cataract surgery. Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery uses a laser to make the corneal incision, break up the cataract, and create the opening in the lens capsule for the intraocular lens.

Optical coherence tomography, a non-invasive imaging technology, is also being used to improve the accuracy of measurements for the intraocular lens, increasing the likelihood of good vision after surgery.

As one can see, cataract surgery has evolved significantly and continues to improve. As an eye surgeon in Mumbai, I am dedicated to staying on top of these advancements and providing the best possible care for my patients.
